After the 2020 Madrid Open couldn't be held properly due to the Coronavirus, the organizers have decided to create something special. They came up with an idea to create a Virtual Madrid Open that will take place from 27th to 30th April.
The first 4 players that confirmed participation in the event were Andy Murray, Lucas Pouille, Angelique Kerber and Carla Suarez Navarro. Now, also Rafael Nadal, Kiki Bertens, John Isner and Fiona Ferro confirmed their participation. Players also commented on joining the field. There are still 12 more players to join both ATP and WTA draws.
“I think the Virtual Project is a fun initiative for a great cause. I will certainly miss not playing in Madrid this year as I really like the tournament but I will do my best to compete from the couch at home in the Tennis World Tour game. I will try my best to perform as well in the virtual game this year as I did last year on-court in Madrid," said Bertens.
“I am excited that the Mutua Madrid Open is hosting a virtual tennis competition. Although I am not much of a gamer I will be practicing so I won’t embarrass myself! Love the creativity by the organization and it’s a huge plus that the proceeds will be going to fight the virus," Isner said.
“I am looking forward to participate in this great event and show my skill in this high-level competition. I like as well the charity angle given to it to help our player colleagues in need," said Ferro.
