Former World No.1
Venus Williams was spotted at the premier of Challengers, the new Hollywood movie centered around tennis. However, some fans were not pleased with the American's appearance, with a few even going as far as saying Williams should stop playing on the WTA main circuit.
Challengers is the latest movie to hit theatres in which tennis plays a vital role. It stars rising American actress Zendaya, as she plays the role of a former tennis pro who tries to guide her tennis player husband to superstardom. The film is scheduled for an April 26, 2024 release date, but Williams was invited to the red carpet premiere this week.
Williams recent subpar play draws harsh response from fans
The WTA icon has been struggling on tour over the last few years. Williams has gained entry to most recent events via wild cards, infuriating several fans. Most believe the 43-year old is taking a spot from younger and more-deserving players. Therefore, it came as no surprise that the seven-time Grand Slam champion's appearance on the red carpet drew the ire of her detractors.
"needs to hit the challenger courts too i fear," wrote an outspoken fan in response to a video of Williams walking the red carpet at the Challengers premiere.
