New York Empire became the champions of the 2020 World Team Tennis season after defeating Chicago Smash in the final.
After
New York Empire and Chicago Smash knocked out the first two seeded teams in the semifinals, they battled in the final of the 2020 World Team Tennis season. Empire played in the final also the last season but failed to win the title.
The final matchup was kicked-off by a match between
Jack Sock & Neil Skupski and Rajeev Ram &
Brandon Nakashima. The New York Empire team got an early lead in the final when they triumphed 5-2 in men's doubles.
Empire continued to show their great form also in the mixed doubles. Jack Sock & Coco Vandeweghe defeated Rajeev Ram & Bethanie Mattek-Sands 5-4 and they led already by 4 games.
However, Smash fought back in singles. First, Brandon Nakashima defeated Jack Sock 5-0 and then Sloane Stephens outplayed Coco Vandeweghe 5-3. But it was not over yet.
The women's doubles were there to save the day for the New York Empire. After Coco Vandeweghe & Nicole Melichar defeated Sloane Stephens & Bethanie Mattek-Sands 5-4, they got a shot to level the score in the extra time.
They managed to do so when they have won two games in a row and leveled the score of the competition. The final of the 2020 World Team Tennis season couldn't have a better ending when it was decided by the deciding point in the super tie-break.
And it was the New York Empire team that prevailed to become the 2020 World Team Tennis champions. Coco Vandeweghe, who was part of the women's doubles team also became the Finals MVP.
