Paula Badosa extended her poor run of form by getting beaten by Qinwen Zheng 6-3 6-2 in the opening round in Tokyo.
The Spaniard has not been playing strong tennis in recent weeks and her struggles continued in Tokyo. Qinwen Zheng has been playing really strong tennis all year long and she produced another sturdy effort to defeat Badosa.
The Chinese player has a really strong serve and plays very deep and precise groundstrokes with today being the day when everything worked. Badosa plays similarly but today she was simply unable to match Zheng from the baseline.
Too many errors and too much frustration from the Spaniard who hasn't been in good form for a while. The opening set opened well for her but rather quickly Zheng was able to turn the deficit around and win it 6-3. It ended with a 5-0 run from Zheng to close it out.
The second set opened with an early break by Zheng and she kept applying heavy pressure on Badosa who bucked under it. It was a double break lead that became a 6-2 finish. A superb win for Zheng who is looking like a very promising talent.
