Romania’s
Simona Halep is likely to get a positive result regarding
her chances of playing in the US Open.
The former world number one is currently sidelined after her
doping test came back positive.
Halep’s trial is underway but a few days back, surprisingly,
she appeared on the list of players who are likely to take part in the US Open.
While that development surprised a few but it seems that her
participation will be according to the rulebook.
As per the WTA rules, a player cannot signup for a tournament
taking place during his or her suspension. However, since the trial is underway
and the verdict has not been delivered yet, she is well within the laws to be
available to take part in the final Grand Slam of the year.
The 31-year-old tested positive for Roxadustat last year
after which she has not taken part in any on-court activities.
Halep has an impressive record while playing in tha major tennis
tournaments, having won two Grand Slam titles in her career.
Her first triumph came in 2018 when she lifted the French Open
after beating America’s Sloane Stephens in the final with a score of 3–6, 6–4,
6–1.
Halep’s second triumph came a year later in London where she
defeated America’s Serena Williams in the final in straight sets with a score
of 6-2, 6-2 to lift the Wimbledon title.
Other than that, Halep has also played in the final of the
Australian Open in 2018 where she lost to Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki with a
score of 7–6(7–2), 3–6, 6–4.
US Open remains the only competition where she is yet to
play in the final. Her best outing was in 2015 where she was knocked out in the
semis after losing to Italy’s Flavia Pennetta in straight sets with a score of
6-1, 6-3.
