Day 2 of the Saint Petersburg Ladies Trophy tournament delivered what many expected, good tennis, good matches so here's the recap.
As
advertised the Saint Petersburg Ladies Trophy gave the fans some exciting matches on day 2. Not many surprises were featured in the earlier matches as Dodin beat Kuzmova 6-2 6-2 and Van Uytvanck beat Mladenovic 6-4 6-1. After those easy and fast matches, we got some excitement.
A 3-set thriller between Tomljanovic and Vondrousova ended with the Australian as the winner. The end result was 3-6 6-3 and 6-4 with the Australian booking a spot in the 2nd round.
The first Rusian that played in Saint Petersburg was Kudermetova who barely defeated Putintseva from Kazakhstan 7-6(4) 1-6 7-5. The Russian was overjoyed with that victory and continued the good atmosphere in the next match as well.
Donna Vekic came out and with the support of the crowd easily defeated Ahn 6-4 6-1.
Then we had a French affair as Ferro battled Garcia and that match as well needed 3 sets to be done. Ferro ultimately prevailed 7-5 3-6 6-3. Then we had another Russian on the court. Svetlana Kuznetsova came out to loud cheers of the home crowd and turned back to the clock.
Saint Petersburg's most famous tennis player had no issues against Brady as she defeated her 6-3 6-1. And the grand finale came last. An all-out Russian clash between Kasatkina and Alexandrova. The first set was a hard battle but Alexandrova ultimately came out on top 6-4.
In the 2nd set, it was Kasatkina who played much better and took the early lead. She would hold on to win it 6-3. The final set was a delight for the crowd as a Russian would win either way. The players traded a few games before Alexandrova broke her opponent and took a commanding 5-2 lead. Unfortunately for her, she couldn't convey that to an easy victory as she allowed her opponent to fight back to 6-4. Luckily she composed herself in time and won it 6-4.
