The eight-time Miami Open champion Serena Williams will not compete at one of her favorite events next week, undergoing oral surgery and deciding to skip Miami and take more time for rest.
Between 2002-2015, Serena claimed eight Miami Open titles, always enjoying playing in Florida and spending a significant part of the year there. Following the recent oral surgery, Serena has to skip the Miami Open, despite preparing for it and feeling motivated to chase that ninth crown, the first in six years.
Serena's only official tournament of the season came at the Australian Open, beating five rivals before falling to Naomi Osaka in straight sets in the semis.
"I'm disappointed to withdraw from the Miami Open because of recent oral surgery. Miami is a special tournament for me because it's my home. I am sad I won't be able to see the incredible fans this year, but I look forward to coming back soon," Serena Williams said.
"We will certainly miss having Serena at this year's tournament, and I know it was a very difficult decision for her. She has won the Miami Open more than any player in history, has a home here in South Florida, and is always a fan favorite. We hope she is back on the court soon and look forward to welcoming her back here next year," tournament director James Blake said.
