Simona Halep loves some good drama, at least that's what her tennis lately is looking like but she was able to keep it in two against Flipkens 7-5 6-4 at Wimbledon.
Simona Halep arrived in London with lofty ambitions of lifting the trophy again. It's quite a goal and while she's certainly capable, it's been a while since Halep has played that consistently. If anything, her play has been rather shaky lately with some questionable performances. Today was another one despite the win.
She opened with a break which is good but lost her serve immediately. Then she fell behind 3-1 but broke back to 3-2. She lost her serve again being down 5-2 this time around. She would win 5 games in a row to take the opening set 7-5. Unnecessary complications but then a brilliant comeback. Halep in a nutshell lately.
To be fair to Flipkens she truly did play a very strong match and since working with Mouratoglou, Halep is playing super-aggressive which doesn't always work. The 2nd set was another strange one. Once again it was Flipkens who jumped out to an early 3-0 lead that became a 4-1 later on. Once again we saw the same thing with Halep winning five games in a row to close out the 2nd set 6-4.
So in both sets, Halep was down a break but then went on to win 5 games in a row to win both sets. Good enough today, but tomorrow?
