The Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic kicked off this week with some enticing first round action, with former World No.3 Sloane Stephens booking her spot in the next round.
Stephens rallied from a 0-4 deficit in the first set to defeat compatriot Catherine McNally 6-4 6-2, making her return to San Jose after nine years. She will face Danielle Collins in the next round, as the seventh seed defeated Shelby Rogers 6-4 6-3 in another all-American battle.
Surprise Wimbledon quarterfinalist Ajla Tomljanovic fought back from being down 1-6 3-5 against American Amanda Anisimova, saving two match points to escape with a 1-6 7-5 7-5 comeback victory. The Australian won the last four games to secure her spot in the next round, withstanding 40 winners from Anisimova's racket.
Joining Tomljanovic in the next round was eighth seed Yulia Putintseva, who earned a 7-5 6-3 win over Donna Vekic. Fourth seed Daria Kasatkina also moved on the next round, with a 3-6 7-5 6-3 win over Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia.
