Play got suspended in the final game of the Raducanu - Fernandez match for a MTO timeout in order to treat a bleeding laceration.
The unfortunate scene happened as Raducanu slipped on the court in the previous rally causing her knee to start bleeding. Umpire Veljovic stopped the match immediately and called for the physio in order to treat the wound. Fernandez was not too happy about it as she had just secured a break point and played great tennis at the moment. It also gave Raducanu a breather which she used to compose herself and close out the match afterwards.
Andy Roddick watched the match and he was quick to point out that the rule clearly indicated that play must be stopped immediately until the bleeding stopped. He wrote:
"Everyone trying to kill joy by overreacting to the stoppage in play to stop the knee bleeding, just stop …. It’s not even Emma’s call. They will not allow active bleeding while on the court. Had to be addressed. Out of her control. This match won’t be defined by that. Just stop.”
Roddick had a fair point as the rule clearly states that no bleeding is allowed and the match is suspended until it stops. Fernandez even admitted after the match that she was in the wrong saying she initially did not understand what had happened.
Match got resumed minutes later and Raducanu closed it out.
