Today's archive dig: Steffi Graf's racquet from her 1988 "Golden Slam," sweeping all 4 Majors & Olympic Gold medal!
Steffi Graff achieved the calendar Golden Slam once by winning all four grand slam that year as well as the gold medal at the Olympics and Rennae Stubbs doesn't think it will happen again.
The sheer difficulty of achieving this makes it a historic achievement. Not only do you need to win all four grand slams in a year but you also need to win the gold medal at the Olympics. There are only several tries in an athlete's life with the games happening every four years but just individually, winning a gold medal and completing a calendar slam are incredibly hard to do.
Graff did it and Stubbs doesn't see anyone repeating that:
“I think if there’s one record that will forever stand, I think it will be that one because to be able to do it in one year (is extraordinary). You have all four trophies and a gold medal in your trophy case from the same year and Steffi Graf is the only person who has that. Like that is so cool.”
