Iga Swiatek faced really tough opposition from Donna Vekic but she managed to get the win in straight sets 6-3 6-4 securing a place in the quarter-finals.
The Polish player generally smashed opponents in Rome but Vekic has been a matchup that always gave her some trouble. Like many before, this match too was rather close, far closer than how her matches generally go in Rome. She took an early lead 4-1 establishing herself as the better player but Vekic managed to break back a few games later.
The Polish player got the warning and played a very serious next game to break the Croatian once more and this time around she held her serve to close out the first set 6-3. She was the more dominant player from the baselines but Vekic applied some heavy pressure and she didn't handle it all that great.
Swiatek faced 5 break points in the first set, three more than Vekic faced on her serve. The second set was similar in that regard as Swiatek once again faced more break points on her serve than Vekic did because the Croatian did really well when hitting her serve. It was the second serve where Swiatek did her damage converting the only break point she had.
It proved enough to win in two sets but this was much closer than her matches before.
