Iga Swiatek kept her
Australian Open title dream alive with a convincing victory over
Maria Camila Osorio Serrano on Wednesday, flying past the Colombian to book her spot in the third round.
It took the US Open champion an hour and 24 minutes to secure the 6-2 6-3 victory, displaying her trademark aggressive play from the baseline. Swiatek raced to a 4-0 lead in the opening set, before Osorio was able to break back and prevent the bagel. This did little to hinder the Polish star, who closed out the first set soon after.
Osorio kept pace with the top seed to start the second set, but was soon broken to fall into a 1-3 hole. After extending the lead to 5-1, Swiatek displayed a lapse in concentration, allowing Osorio to win two consecutive games. However, the Polish ace regained her momentum, and again served for the match, sealing her victory with a backhand winner.
Having already captured the French Open and the US Open, Swiatek is hoping to add the Australian Open title to her Grand Slam trophy cabinet. The 21-year old's best result came at last year's event, where she fell in the semifinal to eventual champion Ashleigh Barty.
