Maria Sakkari arrived in London saying she was ready to win Wimbledon but her tennis betrayed her against Tatjana Maria 6-3 7-5.
This was not a very good match by Sakkari, as she was beaten by a player who was once a good player and now is playing pretty solid tennis after returning. Despite all of that, it's a major upset at SW19 with Sakakri being rather strong on grass. She's one of the best players in the world, obviously, this is a shocker.
The start of the match was rather calm with neither player was able to create too many chances. Sakkari had some early break points but Maria held on to win the game. After that, the German started applying more pressure on her opponent and she got a break point. Maria took it for the 5-3 lead closing out the set 6-3 behind 8 winners and for errors.
Sakkari risked more but it did not pay off as she had 13 errors to only 13 winners. That was not enough but things went a lot better early in the 2nd set. Sakkari finally found some solutions taking a 5-2 lead. She had more winners than errors and that proved the winning combination until it wasn't.
Out of nowhere Sakkari completely fell apart from the baseline sailing balls wide. Maria kept applying pressure and somewhat true to style, the Greek player fell apart. She lost 5 games in a row to lose the 2nd set 5-7 crashing out of Wimbledon.
