The official Tennis Channel account on X posted a promotional poster for Wimbledon, sparking controversy by including Coco Gauff instead of former champion Marketa Vondrousova. The banner aimed to highlight that only one week remains until the start of the year's third Grand Slam.
It features four players as standouts for the tournament: ATP and WTA World No. 1s Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek at the bottom of the poster, while 2023 champion Carlos Alcaraz and female World No. 2 Coco Gauff are highlighted at the top. This raised some eyebrows for not featuring the 2023 champion on the women's side, unlike on the men's side.
Other users defended the poster, supporting the inclusion of Gauff despite her not having a particularly notable run at Wimbledon. Her best results were reaching the fourth round in 2019 and 2021. Additionally, in 2023, she had a disappointing performance, being eliminated in the first round despite being the 7th seed.
Some users argued that the poster made sense given that Gauff is currently the World No. 2, just like Alcaraz. They also noted that Tennis Channel is an American media outlet, which tends to prioritize featuring local players in its publications and posters.
