Martina Navratilova joins criticism against journalist for controversial headline on trans women in sports. Columnist Scott Ostler published an article addressing women’s protests against the inclusion of transgender women in women’s sports.
The 18-time Grand Slam champion, who has often stated her opposition to including trans athletes in women’s sports, was unimpressed by Ostler’s controversial headline. The columnist titled his piece, ‘Great volleyball amid trans hysteria,’ drawing widespread criticism on social media.
“Does longtime, well-respected sportswriter @scottostler really believe males have no physical advantage over women? Why is he torching his reputation writing the following? ‘College women’s volleyball and basketball teams routinely recruit male students as practice opponents,’” posted the account ‘WomenAreReals.’
In response, Navratilova shared the post on Instagram, adding: "And the irony of the headline—the word HYSTERIA has always been ascribed to women overreacting since we can’t handle our emotions. In any case, @scottostler—happy to talk to you about this if you’re interested in finding out more. Also—the women’s net is 9 inches lower…why?"
Navratilova has frequently been accused of transphobia due to her staunch stance against trans athletes competing in women’s categories. The former World No. 1 maintains that there are undeniable physical differences that negatively affect female competition.
During Wimbledon a few months ago, Navratilova addressed the criticism she has faced: "I've been jettisoned by a lot of the groups in the LGBT community," Navratilova said. "But, you know, I've been speaking my mind for a long time. I'm not going to change that. Yes, it's been pretty rough. But I know I'm on the right side of history. I'm right on most people's opinion about women's sex-based spaces, and especially sports. They need to stay female."
