Serena Williams created some amazing scenes on the tennis court but it's hard to forget the moment when she ordered coffee midway through a match.
It happened back in 2015 when Williams was competing at the Hopman Cup. She was playing against Flavia Pennetta and lost the opening set 0-6 which is not something you saw often from Williams and drastic measured had to be taken.
She turned around to the umpire and asked whether it was illegal to order an espresso which the umpire had to check. After it became apparent that it was not, Williams got the caffeine fix she needed and she won the match 2-1 beating Pennetta 6-3 6-0 in the next two sets.
After the match Williams famously said:
“I am a coffee drinker and I didn’t have mine this morning and I was just feeling it. So I had to get some coffee in me. I told them to just give me a shot of espresso. I asked them if it was legal – ‘Is it illegal to have a shot of espresso?’ – because I had never done it before. I needed some espresso. I needed to wake up – the jetlag gets you all the time.”
It became headlines again after Shuai Zhang did something similar, but she was actually hungry not craving a cofee. Both videos are below.
