Aryna
Sabalenka successfully defended her title at the 2024 Australian Open, securing
her second Grand Slam victory. Congratulations poured in from fellow players
and tennis personalities on social media, including
Paula Badosa, Ana Ivanovic,
Ons Jabeur,
Iga Swiatek, among others.
Sabalenka
dominated the final, delivering an impeccable performance to defeat the
13th-seeded Chinese player, Qinwen Zheng, with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-2.
Entering
the final as the current world No. 2, Sabalenka was the overwhelming favorite,
capitalizing on the early exits of top-seeded players in the top half of the
draw. Her relentless form from the first match carried through to the final,
where she showcased her dominance against Zheng. Despite this being Zheng's
first Grand Slam final, she displayed a commendable performance and is set to
rise to world No. 7 in the upcoming rankings.
Sabalenka's
title-winning campaign was marked by her clinical performance, as she did not
drop a single set throughout the tournament. Only Coco Gauff managed to pose a
challenge by pushing her to a tie-break, which Sabalenka ultimately won. In
total, Sabalenka conceded just 31 games in the seven matches of the tournament,
averaging only 4.5 games per match.
