Emma Raducanu continues her impeccable level after overcoming Russian Veronika Kudermetova, achieving her third consecutive victory at the Rome Open. The 21-year-old Brit advanced to the 4th round of a WTA 1000 for the second time this season – previously falling in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open.
The 2021 US Open champion is quietly accumulating wins and ranking points. This week she has already defeated Maya Joint (7-5, 6-7, 6-3), Jil Teichmann (6-2, 6-2) and Kudermetova (5-7, 6-0, 6-1), placing her at No. 42 in the live ranking. Raducanu has 8 wins in her last 10 matches and has shown great form in the clay-court swing.
After three consecutive wins in Rome, higher-ranked opponents begin to appear on her path, and Gauff will be the Brit's next rival. Following her latest victory at the Foro Italico, Raducanu was asked on Sky Sports about her upcoming match.
“Gauff for the Round of 16, will that be another marker of how comfortable and how your game is on this surface?” Sky Sports presenter Gigi Salmon asked Raducanu. “I haven’t looked at the draw to be honest, but yeah, she’s a great competitor,” she said.
“Are you sure I’m playing Coco?” she added, laughing.
“I’m positive, even double check,” the interviewer replied.
“Okay, okay,” Raducanu said, laughing. “I think I’m playing pretty good tennis right now and she is going to be a great test, I mean she made the final of the French Open, so she’s great on this surface, and yeah I’m just going to keep focused but savor this one for now.”
The 4th seed Coco Gauff comfortably defeated Magda Linette (32nd seed) in the third round and has 14 wins at the Rome Open, more than at any other WTA 1000 tournament. Raducanu will have to pull off a major feat, as she has never before in her career defeated a player in the top 4.
