2021 delivered some memorable matches and one of those came in the Rome Masters Final where Iga Swiatek defeated Karolina Pliskova.
Both of these players played some stellar tennis hence why they ended up in the final but only one played great tennis in the final. Karolina Pliskova produced a rather uninspired effort in the final which is a bit unusual for her. While not the greatest performer in finals the Czech player rarely gets easily defeated as she did here.
Swiatek, for the most part, was superb all day exhibition deep focus in the match from start to finish. She was blasting the ball hard from the baseline and dominated Pliskova in rallies. It was quite evident early on that the Polish player was the far better player and she would most likely win the trophy. What people did not expect was the final score.
Swiatek won the opening set with 6-0 in just over 20 minutes of play. She did the same for the 2nd set as well with the match finishing in about 45 minutes with a double bagel in the final. Quite tremendous stuff but well deserved for Swiatek. Check out some of the highlights below.
