Leylah Fernandez, the 2021 US Open runner-up, has surprised fans with an unusual proposal: a date in Montreal with one of them! The former world No. 13 shared a video on Instagram confirming she's single and eager for a date – though the lucky person will need her father's prior approval.
Despite not being in peak form lately, the 22-year-old star has managed to stay within the top 40 for the past year. As she prepares for her home WTA 1000 tournament, Fernandez wants to use her time in Montreal to focus on her personal life. She's doing so with an intriguing social media call-out, inviting men to DM her if they're interested in a date.
"In Montreal, I would like to go on a date. You know what I really want to do and that I haven't done is going on a date," she said in the video. "I am not a big fan of dating apps. So, I actually am gonna do things my way. I am gonna go on one date for one hour in Montreal. If you wanna be my date, DM me, let me know about yourself. See you there!"
Fernandez later captioned the reel, confirming it's no joke and she's seriously looking for applicants: "This will be fun, right? 😅🙈 This isn’t a joke. I fully intend to go on a date in Montreal so go ahead and DM me… time to shoot your shot🤪 . PS: you may have to meet my dad beforehand (good luck with that)."
Fernandez has a busy month ahead with the start of the North American hardcourt swing. From July 21st, she'll be competing in the DC Open before heading to Montreal, where she hopes to improve on her 2024 second-round exit.
