Poland’s
Iga Swiatek had a cold handshake with America’s
Coco Gauff after suffering a defeat in the
United Cup Final. Both are regarded
as two of the best women's tennis players in the world in the singles category, along with the likes of Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka.
Swiatek and Gauff faced off in the United Cup and it was the
American who came out on top in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4. In a
video that was shared on the social media platform X — previously known as
Twitter — where it can be seen that the former world number one had a cold handshake
with the American tennis star.
It was Swiatek’s second consecutive defeat to Gauff, and perhaps that’s why she was not interested in having a handshake with the opponent. Previously, both players met in the WTA Finals in Riyadh in the last big event
in women’s tennis last year, where the reigning world number three came out on
top in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4. That defeat played a key role in
Swiatek’s exit from the first round of the competition, where she was defending
her crown.
It was Gauff who went on to lift the title after beating
China’s Zheng Qinwen in the final with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. Today’s result
helped United States in clinching the title as well. In the other encounter, it
was the 2024 US Open runner-up and current world number six Taylor Fritz who
defeated Hubert Hurkacz in the final with a score of 6-4, 5-7, 7-6.
