Three former world number ones had a great time during the
Met Gala. The event is being organised to raise money for the museum's Costume
Institute. In a video post on the social media platform X — previously known as
Twitter — three former women’s world number one were seen having a great time. That
included
Serena Williams, her sister
Venus Williams and Russia’s Maria
Sharapova. While Serena and Sharapova have already retired from the sport,
Venus is still playing at the highest level at the age of 43.
Serena, who is often regarded as the greatest players in the
history of women’s tennis in the Open era, having won as many as 23 Grand Slam
titles, retired from the sport back in September 2022 after struggling with a
form and fitness. Other than winning major, the 42-year-old also won four
Olympic gold medals for her country, one in the singles category in 2012 and
three in the doubles category (2000, 2008 and 2012).
On the other hand, Sharapova surprisingly retired in
February 2020 at the age of just 32. She ended her illustrious career after
winning five Grand Slams. Venus, who is Serena’s elder sister, has won seven
Grand Slams in her illustrious career. She also won three Olympic gold medals
for her country and all of them came in the doubles category while playing
along with Serena.
