Former American tennis player
Sam Querrey has revealed that he
accidentally called
Madison Keys just before her
Australian Open final against
world number one
Aryna Sabalenka. The 29-year-old clinched her first Grand Slam
title after beating the two-time defending champion in a grand finale on Saturday
with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
When qualified for the final after beating the world number
two Poland’s Iga Swiatek with a score of 5-7, 6-1, 7-6, Keys received a lot of
congratulations from her friends and colleagues. Amongst them was her friend
Querry, but his method of wishing his friend ahead of the big day ended
up becoming a hassle as he accidentally FaceTimed Keys at 2 AM in Australia
ahead of the final.
Querry has been recently quoted in a report where he explained
how the incident took place and revealed that he was hoping that his call at 2
AM in the night would not become a problem for Keys as she was trying to win
her first major title in her career.
“When I woke up, I was watching highlights, saw that Keys
won. I go in my phone to text Madison, I accidentally hit the FaceTime button,”
he said as quoted in a report by English media outlet Daily Express. “I panic,
I hang up. My wife was like, ‘Who are you FaceTiming?’ [I said] ‘I accidentally
just FaceTimed Keys’. [She said] ‘You idiot’.” Madison then FaceTimes me back. I’m
like, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s 2.15am [in Australia]’. I answer, I’m like, ‘Hi
Madison, I’m so sorry, I meant to text you, I’m an idiot. I hope I didn’t wake
you up. So then I hang up because I’m panicking still, and then I text her, I’m
like, ‘I’m so stupid, I just went total old man move and accidentally FaceTimed
you’. She’s like, ‘No problem’. But now I’m worried that it was 2.15am, she was
trying to sleep and did she maybe not get a good night of sleep? If she doesn’t
win the tournament now, I’m going to feel like I’m responsible for her not
getting that proper night of sleep. What an idiot move from me.”
