With the next generation taking over on the WTA Tour, several have created a "WTA Big Three" that includes Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina. However, journalist Amy Lundy Dahl is puzzled as to why American prodigy Coco Gauff is excluded from the list of dominant tennis stars.
The aforementioned quartet have dominated women's tennis in recent years, with seven of the last eight Grand Slam titles held among them. However, fans and critics tend to omit Gauff, usually only mentioning a "Big Three" when referring to the top players on tour.
Dahl believes Gauff should be included in the exclusive group
The tennis journalist seemed perplexed as to why Gauff is never credited as being a force on tour. Dahl provided statistics to justify the American's inclusion, stating Gauff leads Sabalenka and Rybakina in head to head meetings, 4-3 and 1-0 respectively. Furthermore, the 2023 US Open champion has the same number of Grand Slam titles as Rybakina, who won the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. Each has only one Major singles title to their name.
"The talk of a new women’s big 3 rivalry with Swiatek, Sabalenka & Rybakina is great & all. But why not Gauff? She’s 3rd in the world. She’s ahead in the H2H with Sabalenka & Rybakina. She has the same amount of Grand Slams as Elena. What gives?" wrote Dahl on Twitter.
