Maria Sakkari congratulated Anett Kontaveit on her triumph in St. Petersburg admitting that the Estonian deserved it.
Anett Kontaveit and Maria Sakkari played a superb final at the St. Petersburg Open. Kontaveit opened up with an early lead but fell apart late to lose the set. She trailed in the 2nd but came back to win it and then did the same thing in the final. It was a brilliant comeback that left Kontaveit speechless by her own admission.
Sakkari paid respec to Kontaveit at the trophy ceremony admitting that she deserved it:
“This feels familiar. Anett, here we are once again. It’s disappointing from my side but you really deserve it. We’re great friends and I’m really happy for you for your achievements.”
It was the 13th time they met with Kontaveit holding the 7-6 lead now. They played several times in the past few months and Kontaveit edged out Sakkari every time hence the familiar comment by the Greek.
