It's ATP Semifinals day at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells with Cam Norrie taking on Grigor Dimitrov and Taylor Fritz taking on Nikoloz Basilashvili.
The ATP Indian Wells field has come down to only four players and out of those four only won ever won a ATP 1000 Masters before. It was Grigor Dimitrov who won the Cincinnati Masters a few years ago and this field is quite a surprise in many ways. Some of these players have been in lackluster form and only one has played consistently good tennis all year (Norrie).
The first semifinal will feature Cameron Norrie and Grigor Dimitrov. Norrie has been one of the better players in 2021 with the Brit ranking in the top 6 for most wins. This week was amazing for him as he took down some noted opponents with some strong play. Norrie will fancy his chances against Dimitrov who showed even more brilliance than him but he also admitted to feeling tired.
Dimitrov will need to be as fresh as possible against Norrie who is not shy of making it a slugfest and very physical match. Norrie covers the court very well and can defend really good which could be a problem for Dimitrov on this court. It will come down to who is sharper and either one is capable of winning it. The 2nd semifinal will feature players who pulled off major upsets the day before. Basilashvili took out Tsitsipas while Fritz overcame Zverev.
It's hard to argue against Fritz in this matchup with the maturity and consistency in his play. Basilashvili on his day is almost unbeatable with powerful groundstrokes that can tear down walls. He also showed improved patience in points which make him even more dangerous. The winner of this match will be determined by who can hit from the baseline more consistently. Fritz has been very good at that this week so can he do it again. Find out tonight.
