Jannik Sinner is up to 24-1 and counting so far this season after easily defeating Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 6-2 to reach the Quarter-Finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters for a third consecutive year. Before the tournament began, he spoke of his low expectations on clay, but so far it has been the same as his other surfaced ominance.
Carlos Alcaraz managed to beat him at Indian Wells earlier this season, but aside from that it has been utter dominance from the Italian. He ran into Jan-Lennard Struff in his latest test who has had success on this surface and in Monte-Carlo in the past. But truth betold he was no match for Sinner.
In the first set though, Struff broke after losing his serve in the third game and showed that he was set to keep with Sinner in the early going. But this was soon quelled as he lost a 30-15 lead at a crucial time in the ninth game and Sinner used this momentum to break his opponent and head towards a 6-4 set. This led to a second set masterclass. He only lost four points on serve and he was dominant on his opponent's four service games using two break points as he cruised towards the finish line. He will face the winner of Holger Rune or Grigor Dimitrov next up.
Rune was a finalist in Monte-Carlo last year, while Dimitrov is having his best season for a number of years. So it will be a popcorn clash no matter what. But who can bet against the Italian at the moment.
