Jack Draper claimed his first Masters 1000 title after defeating Holger Rune in the Indian Wells final. The British No. 1 has now solidified his place in the tennis elite with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 victory, which also propels him to world No. 7 in the rankings, his best ranking so far.

It was a phenomenal performance by Draper, who, anchored by an impeccable serve, dominated the match from start to finish, with Rune struggling to find a way to break his opponent’s momentum.

First Set

Jack Draper won the coin toss and, curiously, decided to receive first, a decision that paid off as he broke immediately and took the lead. A simple service game victory marked the tone of the match, with Draper showing great confidence on serve and applying constant pressure when Rune was on the defensive.

The Brit secured a second break, taking a commanding lead that seemed almost impossible for Rune to recover from, especially since Draper won 16 of the first 21 points to go up 4-0. Rune struggled to get into the match, largely due to Draper’s excellence.

Rune saved a break point in the fifth game, bringing the score to 1-4, which could have been a potential mental boost for the Danish player. However, Draper remained in control, winning an incredible 92% of points on his first serve and 63% on his second. Rune, on the other hand, won only 62% on his first serve and 42% on his second – numbers far from competitive.

Rune had to retreat far behind the baseline to try and keep up with Draper, who was flawless on serve. With 7 aces, Draper comfortably sealed the first set 6-2 after just 30 minutes.

Second Set

At the start of the second set, Draper again broke early, further increasing Rune's frustrations. Most of the time, Draper targeted Rune's forehand and avoided his strong backhand, constantly forcing the Danish player to hit uncomfortable shots.

At 2-1 in Draper’s favor, Rune seemed to find his rhythm, hitting several winners, but it was of little use. Draper kept his composure, never allowing Rune a single break point.

It was clear that Rune was struggling and looking disheartened as he found it difficult to even get the ball into play against Draper’s serves. Numerous unforced errors, even while serving, made it nearly impossible to compete with Draper, who arguably played one of the best matches of his career.

A break in the 7th game cleared the path for Draper to close out a truly impressive victory, 6-2, 6-2, and claim his first Masters 1000 title at none other than Indian Wells. Draper will rise to world No. 7 starting Monday, while Rune will make a small move up to No. 12.
