Borna Coric and Stefanos Tsitsipas played a spectacular match at the US Open where Coric won 3-2. While the greatness of that match is quite evident when one looks at the time they played and the end result there have been several other things making it epic.
So the madness started in the 4th set when Tsitsipas was up 5-1 and it looked like he would go to the next round. Right? Not quite. He served for the match but he got smashed in that game. A problem? Not really he was still up a break. He then had two match points on Coric's serve but failed to convey either. A problem? Not really he still had his own service game. And he delivered being up 40-0 and having 3 match points but again failed to convey either of them. A problem? Yes because Stefanos collapsed in that set and lost it 5-7.
He would compose himself in the next set, even breaking Coric and one point but again it would not be enough as he lost the final set in the tiebreak and the match where he failed to use any of the 6 match points he had.
Immediately after the match he could not resist commenting on it on his personal twitter saying:
"This is probably the saddest and funniest at the same time thing that has ever happened in my career!"
It's a genuine statement that makes everyone feel the whirlwind of emotion he himself must have felt. It's is heartbreaking but it is also quite funny at the same time.
After the match Coric himself said:
"I have to be honest and say that I was really lucky. I made some unbelievable returns and I was a little bit lucky at the end."
He truly was, not that that will make Stefanos feel any better.
