Carlos
Alcaraz spoke about the respect he feels for
Novak Djokovic just before the
start of the 2023
US Open.
As the
World No. 1, Alcaraz has already had the opportunity to face Djokovic on four
occasions, with each player securing two victories. Just a week ago, the
23-time Grand Slam champion defeated Alcaraz in an epic final at the Cincinnati
Open, where the match ended 5-7, 7-6(7), 7-6(4) in favor of the Serbian player.
With more
experience in facing Djokovic, the Spanish player discussed the mental strength
that Djokovic has displayed throughout his career and how he has personally
experienced it when going up against him.
“Well,
obviously he's one of the greatest of all time from our sport. No doubts about
it. Everything he does in the game is unbelievable.”
Alcaraz
mentioned that Djokovic inspires him to improve and learn from every match they
play. The World No. 1 responded by highlighting what he admires most about
Djokovic's game:
“Probably his mental rock. I going to say he never give up. I mean, tough,
tough moment, probably he shows that he's down and he's going to lose, and he's
always give the chance to himself to keep playing and be able to win.”
“Probably
that's the most important thing that he has, and I try to take in my own game.
Like in the final that we played, it was exactly the same I'm talking about.
That's something that I learn and I'll try to do in my own game.”
Alcaraz and
Djokovic enter the tournament as the first and second seeds, respectively,
which means they can only face each other in a potential final if both live up
to their favoritism.
The Spanish
player faces the challenging task of defending the title he won in 2022, a year
in which pandemic-related restrictions prevented Djokovic from participating in
the main draw.
