Carlos Alcaraz has been named the Laureus Breakthrough Athlete of the Year award winner beating out fellow tennis player Elena Rybakina after a stellar 2022 season.
Both players had really good years but it was really hard to beat out Alcaraz after the year he produced in 2022. He started off well winning an event in Brazil and then added a Masters in Miami. He would add another one in Madrid to solidify himself as one of the best players in the world. The Roland Garros - Wimbledon stretch proved okay but without any major result so we had to wait for a while for another huge one.
It came at the US Open as he made his way to the final and then beat Casper Ruud to lift his first major trophy and become world number one. He didn't have too many great results from that point on as he dealt with injuries that ultimately prevented him from playing at the 2022 ATP Finals. Still, he was able to hold onto his number-one rank finishing the year as the number-one player in the world.
Impressive and deserved.
