Alex de Minaur is out of 2024 Wimbledon due to the injury that he suffered during his Last 16 win over Arthur Fils. Novak Djokovic as a result is straight through to the semi-finals of SW19 without playing.
Djokovic will now face off against Taylor Fritz who he could make a 10-0 Head to Head deficit against if he beats him or Lorenzo Musetti who has pushed him in the past and perhaps would be the worse of the two.
Albeit Musetti does have a usual issue of closing out the match against Djokovic which he has found out the hard way especially at Roland Garros. It is an unfortunate end for De Minaur who has had an exceptional season. Against Fils, the signs were on the wall as he jarred his hip on match point and walked gingerly to the net with many fans fearing the worst.
But those worst fears have now been realised as De Minaur now has to withdraw and means we will only get Musetti v Fritz today in the men's draw. The WTA names will take Centre Stage as a result with Elina Svitolina facing Elena Rybakina and Barbora Krejcikova aiming to topple Jelena Ostapenko. The semi-finals will be complete on that side of the draw after Vekic v Paolini was set yesterday.
We already have one men's semi-final too with a titanic tussle between Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev set for Thursday. But Djokovic will no doubt be pleased about not playing again yet with the storm surrounding booo or Ruuuune gate and also his recent knee operation. So no doubt a day off of sorts will be appreciated.
While for De Minaur, he will obviously be gutted and will likely be in press shortly to explain the reasoning behind it. But a crushing end for the Aussie as we head into Day 10.
