Novak Djokovic will not compete at the 2026 ATP Finals after suffering a shock third-round defeat to Rinky Hijikata at the Paris Masters. The Serbian lost 6-2, 3-6, 3-6 after surrendering his opening-set advantage, ending his chances of reaching the season-ending tournament in Turin. His elimination leaves Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul as the only remaining players capable of changing the final qualification picture.
The result follows Alex de Minaur's exit, with the Australian also losing in the third round. Their defeats have significantly narrowed the race, leaving Rafael Jódar defending the last available qualification position and Frances Tiafoe in a particularly strong position to join the eight-player field.
Meanwhile, Arthur Fils and Flavio Cobolli have already secured their places in Turin. Both qualified without needing to win another match in Paris, with the earlier eliminations of Jódar and Tiafoe's defeat to Quentin Halys guaranteeing that they would finish inside the top nine of the ATP Race.
Fils' qualification is particularly significant for French tennis. The 22-year-old will become the first Frenchman to compete at the ATP Finals since Gael Monfils in 2016, ending a 10-year absence for the country. Cobolli, meanwhile, will make his debut after a breakthrough season that included a run to the top six of the Race.

Djokovic and De Minaur eliminated as ATP Finals race narrows

Djokovic's defeat was one of the biggest surprises of the Paris Masters. After taking the first set 6-2, the Serbian lost control of the match as Hijikata raised his level to claim the second set 6-3. The Australian then produced another strong performance in the decider, breaking Djokovic twice to complete the comeback and end the seven-time Paris champion's campaign.
Novak Djokovic is hitting a return
The result means Djokovic cannot earn any more points this season and is mathematically out of contention for the ATP Finals. De Minaur had already suffered the same fate after losing 7-6, 6-3 to Tomas Martin Etcheverry, removing two of the biggest names still chasing a place in Turin.
Their exits leave Fritz and Paul as the only players capable of overtaking the current contenders. Jódar, who lost 6-3, 6-4 to Casper Ruud in the second round, remains in ninth place, while Tiafoe occupies eighth after his defeat to Quentin Halys.

Fritz and Paul are the only remaining threats to Jódar and Tiafoe

The qualification scenarios are now considerably simpler. Fritz would need to reach the semifinals to overtake Jódar, while Paul would move ahead of the Spaniard by reaching the final. Both Americans therefore remain capable of taking the last provisional qualification position away from him.
Tiafoe is in a much stronger position. The only scenario in which both he and Jódar would lose their places involves a hypothetical final between Fritz and Paul. With both Americans reaching the title match, they would collect enough points to move ahead of the two players currently occupying the final qualification positions. Any other outcome would leave Tiafoe inside the top nine.

Fils and Cobolli are already guaranteed their places, joining Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Ben Shelton and Daniil Medvedev among the confirmed qualifiers. With Jannik Sinner unavailable for the rest of the season due to injury, ninth place remains the effective qualification cutoff.
The Paris Masters will determine the final two places in Turin. Djokovic's unexpected exit has removed one of the tournament's biggest names from the equation, while De Minaur's defeat has further reduced the number of contenders.
Fritz and Paul are now the only players who can still disrupt the current top nine, with Tiafoe close to securing his first ATP Finals appearance and Jódar needing both Americans to fall short of their required results.
