After two thrillers at
Wimbledon,
Alexander Zverev and
Ben Shelton are through to the Last 16 and the second week at SW19 after taking down Cameron Norrie and Denis Shapovalov respectively.
Zverev was superb at times as he saw off Norrie and ended his charge in a 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 win in which the tiebreak was won astonishingly 17-15.
In both sets Zverev took it by the narrowest of margins sealing breaks at 3-4 and 5-4 to claim both 6-4. Norrie played his part but as is the case was defeated by narrow margins.
Then onto the final set. The final tiebreak was bonkers but can potentially define the run at Wimbledon for Zverev. It was won 17-15 by the German in superb fashion.
Man City manager Pep Guardiola was getting into it and it was quite easy to see why. Zverev had seven opportunities to win it in all and Norrie also will be kicking himself that he didn’t win the set to prolong the tie. It was a bit of a barren run for the Brits with no men getting into the second week.
But while that’s the case, Ben Shelton withheld further honour for the American men as he took down Denis Shapovalov in an epic.
It was a 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win for Shelton and his third straight five set victory after looking likely earlier in the tournament to be heading home.
But in a match in which Shelton and Shapovalov had to return the following day after it was curtailed. It was the American who rose to the occasion. While Shapovalov falls in a welcome run for the Canadian. Next up for Zverev is a real grass court test in either Alejandro Tabilo or Taylor Fritz. On the other hand, Shelton sets up an absolute thriller with Jannik Sinner. Both ones to watch for sure.
