Alexander Zverev just 0.02% away from breaking unwanted World No.1 record as defeats in 2026 continue to climb

Zverev, head bowed, looks at the ground at the Australian Open
Alexander Zverev's 2026 season will be remembered for the right reasons. He broke his Grand Slam duct with a brace of major triumphs while most recently storming to the top of the ATP rankings for the first time in his career. On paper, it has been a brilliant year, but not all is as it seems.
It was certain for a while that Zverev would ascend to the top. Jannik Sinner's knee injury has kept him out for the rest of the campaign, and despite his huge advantage, he was a sitting duck with points coming off at a rapid pace.
In turn, Zverev was on the charge. With Carlos Alcaraz also off the pace thanks to his wrist problem, the German racked up a huge tally of points. The main ones came at Roland Garros and the US Open with 4,000 points alone from those events.
You can only defeat whoever is in front of you, but Zverev only faced two top 10 players in either of those tournaments, that being Taylor Fritz at Wimbledon and Ben Shelton in the final at Flushing Meadows. The reason that this is significant is because when looking at his prior form in other tournaments in 2026, the numbers are not great.

Zverev closes in on unwanted record

Zverev has played top-10 players on 12 separate occasions in 2026. He has won three of them. Along with the aforementioned ones, he recently got the better of Alex de Minaur at the Shanghai Masters. In contrast to this, he has lost nine matches against top 10 players in 2026.
It is a hugely concerning figure that has grabbed the attention of many tennis fans. It has proved costly time and time again when battling for ATP titles. His Grand Slam victories were very impressive, but they are the only two titles he has won this season. He can change that with the Paris Masters and ATP Finals coming up.

Zverev has a win-loss record of 65-17 in 2026. He has a winning percentage of 79.3%. For a World No.1, that is one of the lowest tallies on record.
Andy Roddick holds the unwanted record of worst winning percentage for a year-end World No.1 having held a 79.1% (72-19) in the 2003 season. Zverev is just 0.02% ahead of this, but this is very much under threat. He will need to have a few deep runs to prevent his name from being next to this record.
A real theme of these defeats, especially in the first half of the year, was losing to Sinner. After Wimbledon, the Italian was responsible for almost half of Zverev's losses. Repeated Masters 1000 exits to the hand of his superior foe. He finally got to the final of the Madrid Open but won three games in an abject display. The last time they clashed was at Wimbledon in the final, in which Zverev took the first set but could not see it out.
Even with Sinner out, Zverev is still falling foul to the surprise defeat. He is reliable in terms of getting deep into tournaments, but three-set defeats to Novak Djokovic, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and de Minaur, the most recent coming at the Vienna Open in the wake of his World No.1 confirmation.
Zverev will take on either Lorenzo Musetti or Hubert Hurkacz in the second round of the Paris Masters. It is the location of his most recent Masters 1000 triumph back in 2024, but it is going to be a remarkably tough opening task.
