Varillas played a very brave match taking it to Zverev in most rallies but the German stayed calm and was able to turn around a 1-2 deficit into a 3-2 lead.
It was a very interesting match between Zverev and Varrilas. As expected the German continued to struggle a bit but the 4-hour match certainly proved to him that he still has what it takes to win big matches. It was a big match because Varillas was really good, it wasn't just that Zverev struggled a bit.
Varillas took the first set 6-4 but Zverev stormed back to a 6-1 with some impressive shot-making. Zverev was pretty aggressive at times but even then he was more on the defensive side than his opponent who really elected to finish all rallies on his own terms. Varillas once again got the better of Zverev in the 3rd set taking it 7-5.
The 4th one ended in a tiebreak and Zverev was able to ride his serve towards a 7-3 win. In the final set, Zverev elected to stay patient as Varillas was still bombing away winners. Eventually, he could not keep up the high level and two backhand unforced errors proved too much to overcome. Zverev took it 6-4 for the second round.
