Alexander Zverev and Jenson Brooksby stepped out after midnight in Acapulco for their round 1 matchup and the German barely survived the encounter.
It lasted almost three and a half hours and it finished a couple of minutes before 05:00 in the morning with Alexander Zverev proclaimed the victor. It was a superb tennis match between two players who probably would rather not have played the match at that time and the body language showed it clear at times. The first set was a rather standard one with the American proving a bit better.
Brooksby was more upbeat in the match and showed more enthusiasm while Zverev was quite sluggish at times. In the 2nd set, we saw good stuff from both as the battle between them raged on. Both players had chances to take a break but ultimately neither pulled away. In the tiebreak both again had chances but it was Zverev who finally converted a set point after squandering a few.
He also saved a match point so Brooksby was very close to pulling off the major upset. In the 3rd set, the experience of Zverev proved crucial as Brooksby faltered quite a bit and Zverev was able to cruise rather easily 6-2. What a match for Zverev who will be rushing to bed after this one.

In a match with the latest ever finish in professional tennis history (4.55am), defending champion Alexander Zverev saves two match points and comes back to beat Jenson Brooksby 3-6, 7-6(10), 6-2, in 3h20.
