The first day of the famous Hamburg European Open gave us some good matches and in this report, we will talk about them. The first day of the event featured 4 matches with all of them being quite interesting. The program opened with a match between Taylor Fritz and Pablo Cuevas. The Uruguayan went through the qualifiers and his familiarity with the court and conditions gave him a clear advantage which was evident early on. After them, we saw a match between veteran Gilles Simon and Jiri Vesely. Vesely proved better today besting the French veteran in straight sets.
The 3rd match featured the return of Kevin Anderson to clay courts. His opponent Tommy Paul from the USA proved better however despite Anderson playing rather well. He is far from his best tennis and the long layoff took its toll. Nonetheless, there were positives from this loss especially the bagel he gave Paul in the 2nd set.
The final match was between Andrey Rublev and Tennys Sandgren with the Russian dealing with the qualifier in straight sets 6-3 6-3. All in all, it was a solid day of tennis that is only a tease of things to come. It's great to see this event back in the calendar and we look forward to covering matches from it.
