Following Aslan Karatsev who did that on Sunday, top-10 stars
Daniil Medvedev and
Andrey Rublev are also through to the
Australian Open quarter-final, sending three Russians into the last eight!
Daniil Medvedev earned the 18th straight victory, beating Mackenzie McDonald 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and 29 minutes. The Russian controlled the action with 29 winners and 15 unforced errors, losing serve once from the only opportunity offered to the American and delivering six breaks from seven chances to sail into the quarters, his first at Majors outside New York.
Pushing strong right from the start, Daniil needed 19 minutes to open a 5-1 gap, serving for the set at 5-2. Mackenzie saved a set point and pulled one break back before Medvedev held at 15 in game ten for 6-4 in 33 minutes. The Russian lost only a couple of points behind the initial shot in set number two and grabbed two breaks for 6-2, moving closer to the finish line. McDonald stood powerless on the return again in set number three and lost serve in games seven and nine to propel Medvedev over the top and into the last eight.
Andrey Rublev is through to his fourth Major quarter-final and the first in Melbourne, spending an hour and 17 minutes on the court against Casper Ruud, who had to retire after trailing 6-2, 7-6.
