World No.6 Andrey Rublev was firing on all cylinders during his easy victory over Dominic Thiem, as the Austrian wasted little time in booking his spot in the second round at the 2023 Australian Open.
Rublev looked unstoppable as he secured a 6-3 6-4 6-2 win over the former World No.3, employing his powerful serve and penetrating forehand to fluster his opponent. The Russian hit seven aces in their 2 hour 11 minute encounter, while winning 81% of points behind his first serve.
In addition to his sublime serving, Rublev hit an impressive 33 winners, while limiting his opponent to just 19. Despite Thiem's best efforts, he was unable to capitalize on his two break point opportunities. The 2020 US Open champion never looked to be in control, and finally ended his Australian Open campaign with a backhand into the net to send Rublev to the second round.
Always considered a dark horse at Grand Slam events, Rublev will look to go one step further this year, after reaching the third round in 2022.
