Murray debated whether to play in Madrid after his Monte-Carlo loss but he opted to do that eventually losing to Vavassori in round one of the event.
He didn't play a very good match but he also played against a player who is playing his best tennis ever this year. Vavassori has been winning on the challenger tour for much of this year and he actually cruised in the qualifiers winning two matches rather comfortably. The loss is a bit surprising but can be explained simply by the better form of the Italian.
He smashed Murray 6-2 in the opening set thanks to serving better which he did compared to Murray. Murray only had 4 winners in the opening set compared to the Italian who had 11 and that was more than enough. The second set was quite a bit more competitive because Murray showed up better.
They traded breaks in the second set but the score was settled in the tiebreak. Vavassori jumped out to an early lead and quite a big one 5-1 but Murray was able to battle back to a 6-5 score making it 6-6 with a great serve. Murray then made an incredible mistake to give Vavassori another match point and the Italian was able to finish it off 8-6.
