The ATP BNP Paribas Open has come down to only Norrie and Basilashvili with both players looking to win the trophy.
Both of these players are in the final deservedly so outplaying their opponents en route to the final. It's not a flashy final but make no mistake, these two players played the best and most consistent tennis in the past 10 days. Both endured tricky matchups having to fight in three sets matches while also enjoying easy victories.
Cameron Norrie is enjoying a tremendous season. This will be his 6th final of the year (matched only by Djokovic) and that paints a very clear picture about how his season went. The Brit plays an interesting style combining a bit of aggressiveness when needed but this week mostly he was breaking down players physically. He rarely makes mistakes and is very sound from the baseline.
That should in theory work well against Basilashvili who enjoys playing more on the aggressive side. The Georgian is suited by the high ounce on these courts giving him plenty of time to set up his devastating forehand and hard-hitting backhand. When he has more winners than errors, Basilashvili is very hard to beat and generally, that has been the case this week.
He also displayed a lot more patience than before in his career which worked to his benefit as well. This will be a close match and neither player possesses a higher level currently to run away with it. In theory, Norrie should handle Basilashvili well but if the Georgian has his day he can outhit Norrie easily. Norrie has posted a 1-4 record in finals so far which is something to keep an eye on with Basilashvili having a better record in finals overall.
For both this will be the biggest match of their career as neither won such a prestigious trophy as this one. It should be a good one and don't miss it. It starts in the small hours of tomorrow at 01:00 CET.
