The Australian team did not face Brazil with the strongest line-up possible. The team lacked Nick Kyrgios or Alex de Minaur, however, other members perfectly replaced them. On the other hand, Japan missed Kei Nishikori a lot and it was visible in a tie against Ecuador.
For Australia, everything started ideally on Day 1 already. Jordan Thompson defeated Thiago Monteiro in straight sets and John Millman turned the match against Thiago Seyboth Wild to give Aussies 2-0 lead.
On Day 2, the doubles match worried the Australians a bit when James Duckworth & John Peers lost to Marcelo Demoliner & Felipe Meligeni in 3 sets. Then, also John Millman lost the first set to Thiago Monteiro in a tie-break and everything was a bit darker for the Aussies. However, Millman managed to come back by winning the other 2 tie-breaks and the whole match 2-1.
Ecuador recorded a bit more dominant victory over Japan. Emilio Gomez defeated Go Soeda in straight sets during the first day. Roberto Quiroz has won 2 tie-breaks against Yasutaka Uchiyama to give his country 2-0 lead after the first day. Gonzalo Escobar & Diego Hidalgo finished the job for Ecuador when they defeated Ben McLachlan and Yasutaka Uchiyama in the doubles.
