Victoria Azarenka and
Beatriz Haddad Maia advanced to the
Madrid Open semi-finals over
Paula Badosa and Mattek-Sands with a very good performance 7-6(0) 7-5.
It was a very interesting doubles match that featured plenty of singles talent with only Mattek-Sands the seasoned doubles player. All of them can play well and they did though Azarenka and Haddad Maia proved better in two tightly contested sets. The first one went to a tiebreak which the first pairing won 7-0.
Before that, we see plenty of battling as Azarenka and her partner took the 4-2 lead though they also gave it right back. Then they fell behind 4-5 but broke back to stay in the set. It was a close call but it proved vital as they ultimately won it in the tiebreak. The second set was another close affair though for much of the set, it really wasn't.
Azarenka and her partner took a 5-2 lead but then they dropped their serve twice to give Badosa and her opponent some chances. The crowd was ecstatic as their player saved two match points to make it 5-5. They lost their serve then to give Azarenka a 6-5 lead which they were able to convert into a 7-5 finish.
