The Spaniards gave fans a lot to watch during the first day in Rotterdam. Both Carreno-Busta and Bautista played whole 3 sets and both matches lasted together for more than 5 hours.
Carreno-Busta opened the tournament against Adrian Mannarino. In the first set, we did not see a breakpoint until the 11th game. The Spaniard got his first opportunity of the set and successfully converted it. At the end of the 1st set and beginning of the second, Carreno-Busta managed to win 14 points out of 15 what granted him the first set victory.
However, in the second set, world number 30 wasted 8 breakpoints and so the set reached the tie-break. It was the Frenchman who was better in the tie-break and leveled the score after two sets.
Players compensated for the lack of broken service games in the third set. While we have seen only 1 break in the previous 2 sets, Carreno-Busta and Mannarino broke each other's service 5 times in the decisive set. And it was again the Spaniard who got one break more and won the set 6-4 to secure the second-round spot.
There, he will meet his countryman, sixth-seeded Roberto Bautista. The world number 12 had a difficult beginning against the qualifier from Hungary, Marton Fucsovics. The Hungarian took the first set after 46 minutes with a 6-4 victory.
However, the Spaniard showed the real class in the second set what escalated in a brilliant performance in the third. After winning the second set 7-1 in the tie-break, Bautista defeated Fucsovics 6-1 in the third set.
Two more matches are yet to be played on day 1 at the World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam. Grigor Dimitrov will meet Denis Shapovalov in a highly-anticipated match. And Dan Evans will take on Philip Kohlschreiber.
