Ben Shelton may have had a good week off the court with his relationship with Trinity Rodman surfacing but on the court, it wasn't as he was bundled out on Saturday by World no.128 wildcard Cameron Wong.
Wong seals the biggest win of his career after a gutsy display prevailing 7-6(3), 2-6, 7-6(5). He is the second lowest man to reach the third round in ten years albeit the last was in 2024.
He defeated Daniel Altmaier to make history in the first round becoming the first player from Hong Kong to ever record a Masters 1000 win. He now has won his second round with Shelton counting this technically as a home tournament.
But Wong made it his home. He snapped Shelton's 14-match winning run of making it count in ATP Masters 1000 tournaments and Grand Slams going all the way back to 2024. He let slip a 5-2 lead in the final set as Shelton looked for some sort of a reprieve.
But in the end, it was too big of a mountain to climb as Wong fell to the floor on completing a win which will mean the world to him and those back home in Hong Kong. He did it in style in a clinical deciding set tie-break to reach the third round of a Masters 1000 for the first time in his career.
Handed a wildcard for this tournament, the decision was certainly vindicated as he has lived up to the billing and being only 20 will now believe a big future is ahead.
“I always trust myself to play in these big stages… I had a tough time [during] the COVID times," Wong said on court as per ATP. "I didn't play for a year and a half and I'm really lucky my team keeps supporting me. I'm really happy. This is for you Hong Kong.
"My parents, my coaches, my team. They really helped me a lot from highs and lows. They know that I'm struggling and came in here, [it was] not easy. Playing against a guy like Ben, it's a dream [to do that], since when I was young. Playing big tournaments against top players, I'm really happy.”
