Ben Shelton was one of the big surprises of the
Australian Open 2023.The 20-year-old reached the quarterfinals of the major in
his first championship outside the United States
The American played 5 matches in Australia and achieved victories
against players like the Chilean Nicolas Jarry, local
Alexei Popyrin and his compatriot
J.J. Wolf. He was eliminated by
Tommy Paul in the last eight. After breaking into
the Top 50 for the first time in his career, he decided to take a break and
withdrew from the next
Dallas Open, ATP 250 tournament.
The Australian Open meant a jet lag for the young player,
so he will not participate in the championship that begins on February 6.
Shelton took to Twitter to comment: “Just made it home. Let the jeet lag begin.”
The demanding schedule of the ATP usually makes the
top ranked players decide to take a few weeks off when there are minor
tournaments and be in better shape for the big championships. Shelton's quick
outburst will likely change the schedule he envisioned at the start of the
season.
