Berrettini was a dark horse candidate to go deep at Wimbledon simply because his game is a natural fit on the grass. Today that was in display early as the Italian was playing his signature one-two punch combination of a great first serve and strong flat forehand.
The 7th seed was able to win the first set with 6-3 after some stellar play on his serve. He saved a lone break point while converting his own by outhitting Hurkacz from the baseline which was expected. The 2nd set was a bagel where Berrettini dominated an absent Hurkacz.
The Polish player could not get anything going and Berrettini rolled him in the 2nd set by hitting 11 winners to only 1 unforced error. Hurkacz looked completely defeated but he was able to force a 3rd set tiebreak despite Berrettini playing some sensational tennis.
In it, Berrettini committed a few bad errors and Hurkacz was able to win it 7-3 mainly thanks to his great serve. However, things took a wrong turn early in the 4th as he lost his serve in the first game. From there Berrettini applied the pressure and closed the match with 6-4.
The Italian played a brilliant match posting an absurd amount of winners (50+) with many of them coming on his serve. He was too good for Hurkacz who admittedly rarely flashed his immense talent.
