"But when I got it. I regretted it": Andy Murray shares why he made the 'worst financial decision' of buying a Ferrari

Former world number one Andy Murray has opened up about the ‘worst financial decision’ he has ever made. The 38-year-old, often regarded as the greatest British player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open era, is famous for making interesting comments, not only now but during his playing days as well.

In a recent interview with British media outlet INews, Murray opened up about the ‘worst’ financial decision he has ever made. Murray stated that the decision was to buy a Ferrari when he was ‘younger’. Murray stated that he never managed to drive it and eventually sold the car after three months. Murray also highlighted that he bought it on his friends' advice.a

“My worst financial decision was buying a car fancy car – a Ferrari – when I was younger,” said Murray. “I never ended up driving it. I sold it about three months after I brought it. A few of my friends said I should buy a fancy car and I thought why not? But when I got it. I regretted it. I am not hugely into cars. I’ll happily drive anything.”

Murray retired from professional tennis after the Paris Olympics in 2024. He finished his illustrious career with three Grand Slam titles, two of which came while playing on his home soil. One of the primary reasons Murray retired from the sport was fitness concerns.

However, just a few months after his retirement, Murray, in a surprising turn of events, became the coach of his former rival, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic. The partnership did not last long as both parted ways after just six months. Since then, there have been many rumours about Murray’s future coaching plans, something he has discussed in recent interviews as well.

Murray was asked about his immediate future goals during the interview, and he gave an interesting response. The former world number one stated that right now, his focus is to be ‘around’ his kids, knowing full well the challenges kids face as they grow up. Murray stated that he is trying to be a ‘good dad’. Murray stated that once his kids grow up and can take care of things themselves, he will focus on his professional growth.

“Right now, I just want to be around for my kids,” said Murray. “I don’t think it’s the easiest time for kids growing up with the problems associated with screens, phones and social media. I think it’s a little bit tricky to navigate. My ambition is to try and be a good dad and a good husband, and when the kids of are more growing up and are able to take care of themselves then I will focus a little bit more on what I want to do with that stage of my life. But right now I am really happy doing what I am doing.”

Murray married his long-time girlfriend, Kim Sears, who was the daughter of the player-turned-coach Nigel Sears. The two started dating in 2005 and eventually married in April 2015. Murray and Kim have a son and three daughters, with the youngest born in March 2021. During the same interview, Murray spoke about how Kim has remained an ‘unbelievable’ support for him throughout his career. He also called her a ‘perfect supporter’.

“Kim has been unbelievable when it comes to supporting me throughout my career,” said Murray. “She’s been the perfect supporter. She really encouraged me to keep pursuing my career. It’s hard sometimes because we have quite a few kids, but we try and make time for lunch or going to the gym together when the kids are at school. I think making time for one another is important. You shouldn’t feel guilty about that.”
